Pink Ribbon Barbie

There actually is a Pink Ribbon Barbie (actually there are three  http://www.barbiecollector.com/search/apachesolr_search/breast%20cancer) though why exactly I am surprised about this I am not sure.  Surely the two go together so perfectly.  Gorgeous Pink Barbie and the gorgeous Pink Survivors.  I have just had a guick look and evidently there are several Pink Ribbon dolls, including three called Faith, Hope and Courage.  ……….  sorry words failed me at this point.

However all is not lost.  There is a doll that actually does some good http://abcnews.go.com/Health/OnCallPlusLiving/Story?id=3738082 by helping small children understand what is happening to their mother, or someone else they know.  How about one for men undergoing treatment?

There is going to be a friend of Barbie’s who undergoes treatment http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/322363 which should be released next year.  Sounds a bit like a marketing move to me in the best Pink-washing tradition.  Wouldn’t it be great to actually believe that this is being done with the sole intention of raising awareness, and helping children cope with the treatment side effects of someone they love?  Hands up all those who believe this …  If this were the case wouldn’t the makers be giving them away at treatment centres?  Or maybe Barbie doesn’t make enough money these days?
